A Gene Tale is a biology storytelling unit where students produce a video about a friend, family, or community member with a health condition.

How can exploring cellular processes through virtual reality help us understand how genes shape health and disease in our communities? Students find and interview a Gene Tale participant, research a gene associated with their condition, and discover first-hand the connections between genes and proteins in "Nano," an immersive VR experience of being inside a cell. Students produce a culminating Gene Tale video that describes an individual's experience with their condition—and the role of genes and proteins in shaping the condition. Students can share their final video story with online communities, potentially reaching thousands that could benefit from understanding how genes relate to the health conditions that affect them.
